“La Petite Couette” – “The Little Hairpiece”

Evelyn Valcourt, owner/manager of Evelyn’s Wig Sales & Service, along with the help of her granddaughter, Stephanie, accepts hair donations for the purpose of making wigs in order to help children and young adults undergoing hair loss from cancer treatments or Alopecia Areata. Evelyn’s is the only Manitoba business working closely with Manitoba hairstylists for this worthy cause.

If you are considering donating your hair, please read the information on this page carefully to ensure the proper procedures are followed to allow your hair to be used.

In order for this project to be successful, it is important that people understand it is done entirely on a volunteer basis. It is not part of the daily work that Evelyn does, which involves seeing clients and fitting them with wigs or headwear. As her clients are the most important part of her business, it is very important the hair donations program does not take away from the time these clients need. This is why it is very important if you are calling in regards to hair donations, you refrain from calling during regular working hours and call ONLY AFTER 6:00 p.m. on weekdays, or AFTER 6:00 p.m. on weekends. This is also why it is very important that individuals DO NOT drop off any hair donations, but mail donations instead. Your cooperation will allow Evelyn to continue providing consultations to clients during working hours, and continue with volunteering her time outside of working hours for her hair donations project.

All hair donations will be used in the wig and hairpiece industry. As it takes donations from several people to make one wig, it is not possible to find out who will receive your hair. Be assured that Evelyn will ensure the wigs being donated from her hair donations program will go to children and young adults from Manitoba who do not have private insurance and cannot afford to purchase a properly fitted wig. This will be complemented with a professional consultation and fitting like she has been providing to all her clients for 28 years.

There are at least three stages the donated hair will go through for "triage" (sorting). The first sorting is done by Evelyn, the second is done by suppliers and the third is done by manufacturers. All donations of hair are greatly appreciated, and Stephanie is keeping track of who sends hair and is sending a thank you to people who include their name and address.

As Evelyn is a professional consultant, wig specialist and wig stylist, and is not a hairstylist, she does not cut hair. Please go to a professional hairstylist of your choice to get your hair cut, making sure the stylist follows the necessary guidelines so that the hair you donate can be used.

Requirements for donating hair (updated November 2009):

Evelyn does NOT cut hair. A professional hairstylist should cut the hair.
Hair should be at least 10 inches (25cm) long. If hair is layered, the shortest layer should be at least 10 inches.
We will accept hair that is less than 10 inches (25cm), as it can be used to make hairpieces, but 10 inches or longer is preferable.
The hair MUST be bound securely at the top with a strong rubber band or elastic in ONE ponytail before being cut. The hair should be cut 2 inches above the elastic. A second rubber band can be placed towards the bottom of the ponytail to keep it from knotting or separating during shipping. Do not use hair squeezies or tape.
Hair must NOT be allowed to fall to the floor.
Hair MUST be CLEAN and DRY. Do not send wet hair.
Hair must be in good condition
Colored hair cannot be accepted.
No dreadlocks.
Braided ponytails are acceptable.
Loose hair, or hair that is not securely bound with a strong rubber band, will automatically be discarded.
Put the ponytail in a Ziploc plastic bag, and then in a padded/bubble envelope. Do NOT put hair loose in a regular envelope.
Mail in a padded envelope to either:

Do NOT drop off hair donations at the above address.
Be sure to include your full name and address, including postal code, in the envelope with your donated hair if you wish to receive a thank you card and acknowledgement of your donation, or include your e-mail address if you would like to received acknowledgement by e-mail. You may also include your age and a story about your donation if you wish. Stephanie plans on creating a scrapbook of interesting stories and pictures. Unfortunately, when we receive boxes of hair with multiple donations, it is not possible to send a thank you to everyone who has donated. Only individual envelopes with contact information can expect to receive an acknowledgement.

Helping Hands for Manitobans with Breast Cancer Inc.

While we gladly accept hair donations, we do not accept any monetary donations. If you are organizing a fundraiser that is getting donations of money in addition to donations of hair, you may consider donating the funds to Helping Hands for Manitobans with Breast Cancer Inc., an organization of which Evelyn is a volunteer member.

Helping Hands Inc. is a charitable organization dedicated to improving the quality of life for Manitobans who require financial aid during their struggle with breast cancer. The organization's purpose is to help those who are unable to cope financially and to ensure that all Manitobans diagnosed with breast cancer have access to the supports and supplies needed regardless of the cost.

A “HAIR-RAISING EXPERIENCE” FUNDRAISER

was held on Sunday, April 2, 2006 at the Inn Seine Bar & Niteclub in Lorette, MB

Sponsored by Evelyn Valcourt, Evelyn’s Wig Sales & Service and Josette & Mike Roch, Dawson Trail Motor Inn – Inn Seine Bar & Niteclub, the afternoon featured many highlights.

Seven adults had their hair cut by five professional hairstylists to donate to “La Petite Couette” – “The Little Hairpiece”. Entertainment was provided by “The ARBRA HILL Band” and “Salsa Explosion" directed by Leonardo Lopez. There were Door Prizes, a Silent Auction, a 50/50 Draw and a “Steak, Spud & Bud”.

The donated hair and proceeds raised are being used to help children and young adults from Manitoba undergoing hair loss from cancer treatments or Alopecia Areata who cannot afford to purchase a properly fitted wig.

A special thank you to all the participants, everyone who donated prizes, everyone who volunteered their time, and everyone who attended this “Hair-Raising Experience”. All of you made it a success!

On Mar. 28, 2006 at Sandra’s Day Spa in Lorette, MB, three people had their hair cut by three hairstylists.

On Mar. 16, 2006 at R.H. Bonnycastle School in Winnipeg, MB, Caroline, an employee of the school, had her hair cut by Anita of European Hair Design, Winnipeg, MB with the Grade Six class in attendance.


This is the first young person to benefit from “La Petite Couette” – “The Little Hairpiece”, a program where hair donations are accepted for the purpose of making wigs in order to help children and young adults with financial difficulties undergoing hair loss from cancer treatments or Alopecia Areata.
